Simple Self-Care Habits

August 16, 2024

How often to you find yourself holding your breath? The past few years, everyone has experienced moments of fragility, overwhelmed sensation, difficulty managing simple tasks because we lived through a lot of intense moments. Our nervous system is sensitized and sometimes gets stuck in a loop of anticipated responses, stress, tension, pain, fear and our bodies respond to it.

Let's breathe deeply again! Take a 3 seconds inhale through your nose, hold it for 5 seconds and exhale for 7 seconds. Repeat 3 times every hour. Notice what happens to your heart rate, your tension, your pain.

Make it a new habit. This can be reminder via your phone or smartwatch but if you can associate it with something you do often, then you will integrate regularly. Every time I wash my hands after an intervention with a client, I practice breathing. I do it for my wellbeing, to keep the stress in check and to be able to stay present with each client.

I particularly love doing this on my strolls in the evening, a cleansing ritual that grounds me. Try it and let me know how it goes.
